stallion across the steppe . Four or five , he was about the right age to be having his first taste of horsemanship .
Walking up a hill to where we ’ d be sleeping I felt a contentment at having been part of the sacrifice of an animal to sustain the existence of others , after all it ’ s from where our food comes , and out here in the wilds of Mongolia was a simple part of daily existence .
Walking amongst the birch forest and the gers of our camp I watched as a rain shower swept across the lake , the men , busily put tools away with their deels pulled tight , the traditional coats often filled with the fleecy skins of sheep as I ’ d just witnessed . The colourful deel , silk belts and black boots something that has been worn for generations too numerous to count and seemed perfect to fit into a hastily approaching modern world where traditions needed to be kept .
An animal scurried amongst the undergrowth of the forest , and I was beckoned away , wild dogs , wolves , inhabit the dim lower reaches of the
