me feeling saddened and almost depleted . The One , a lonesome cow , seems to understand as I glanced once more at Salima .
Riding on , we discovered a world where the roadside was littered with monuments to the dead , and yet these are not the ubiquitous cross , flowers , or plaques seen in many other regions of the world as monuments to those taken in road born accidents , these are dedicated
graves and thoughtful monuments known to the passerby .
Kyrgyzstan seemed awash with monuments , tributes to the past lives of others , placed respectfully roadside so that travellers can bear witness to the once living who , in their own ways , offered so much to so many people . It ’ s hard to disagree that the once ‘ great ’ or ‘ powerful ’ should be the only ones worthy of a monument .
