The Toktogul reservoir , impressive in its size , a monument to Soviet involvement was a chance encounter with the recent past . Equipment , in varying states of decay , was still being used to create hydro electrical power . It was only as the former occupiers could do , brutal in the mechanical form , beautiful to anyone with the slightest interest in engineering design .
A hydro-electrical scheme of this nature meant that some level of civilisation was not too far away , with the approach of Toktogul township came an increase in traffic and a return to the domestic . The bliss of a great ride had come to an end .
Along this road I had caught Max and his support vehicle , we drove
further on to our lodgings for the night , the Oson Hotel , a beautiful little guest house that sits on the Chychkan river . A landscape as different to anything else found on this day ’ s ride . The tight twists and turns remind me of the Great Ocean Road in my Australian home state , yet it wasn ’ t plagued by the tourist hordes and the associated commercial trappings .
As the other riders came in we laughed at how I had been ‘ lost ’, patted down by the police , and found one of the world ' s most engaging rides . I had indeed been lost and if not for the fog of a head full of moonshine I would never have had the experience of a remarkable day , I longed for more riding on the traditional trade routes of the old Silk Road .
