Looking across to Angkor Wat I ’ d shaken my head at the tourist hoards jostling for the perfect selfie and reflected that the greater construction that it is just draws in too many people to feel authentic , I ’ ll take the ‘ newer ’ ruins any day . LW

The south gate is just a seven-kilometre ride from the centre of Siem Reap , almost two kilometres north of Angkor Wat . An entrance fee is required for the entire complex of ancient sites , that also takes in many other areas around Siem Reap . US $ 37 for a single day however , you ’ ll need at least two days to take in much of the experience , a three-day pass is US $ 62 . Tickets can be purchased in person or online .
