Siem Reap River yet it still needed to be available within the walls of the city . A series of canal and channels were constructed allowing fresh water to flow from the northeast to the southwest . Very little remains of the canals , a ditch here , an indentation there . It ’ s true of the whole complex , many buildings have been consumed by the jungle , the stones taken back to where they came , the fallen pieces lay scattered like giant puzzle pieces waiting to be picked up and reconstructed . It ’ s a puzzle that experts from the fields of archaeology , anthropology , and more are working through to piece together where possible , many nations have come together to help gain a greater understanding .
