anywhere , anytime and do anything I want .
I carry with me a tarp instead of a tent . This 3x3-metre square of fabric has been my shelter of choice for a while now . Again , it took thousands of kilometres and countless nights of wild camping to settle on the conviction that this is the way I want to do it . Compared to a tent , my tarp is much lighter and smaller , it ’ s quick to set up after a long day when my body is tired and takes no time to pack down in the morning when I ’ m keen to get moving . However , it is not without its challenges , the most obvious being that I ’ m sleeping directly on the floor and have no way of closing myself in . Sometimes , when the weather closes in I almost question my choices , but any doubts are outweighed by the feeling that the adventure never ends , even when the sun goes down - under my tarp I ’ m still very much in the scene and I ’ ve adapted to love it .
A turning point occurred in South America when , in my tent I became almost resentful of the cocoon of relative comfort that it offered . It sounds dramatic perhaps but it ’ s just another example of how my solo travels have evolved unplanned and unhindered by anyone else ’ s preferences or opinions .
