Mountain protrudes abruptly from the surrounding plains of the Fergana Valley and quickly became a place of pilgrimage for nomadic people and then Muslim faithful . For the traveller , the rocky formation marked the halfway point of the Silk Road .
It is said that the prophet Solomon , significant to Islamic believers , is buried here and sees the mountain named for him as well as his tomb . Islamic pilgrims still make the journey to Sulayman Mountain and walk the many steps to the top , even in the heat of a Kyrgyz summer . The history of the region is contained within a Soviet built museum deep within the mountain , in itself a unique experience .
