TRAVERSE 116
Ocean loved by surfers from all over the world and where there is even a museum dedicated to Antoine De Saint Exupery , author of The Little Prince . An overnight stay in a hotel , the only one found to be open , I make a feast of excellent " pescado " alla modica , for just five euros .
Officially entering Western Sahara in Tah , the gateway to the desert . The former Spanish colony is now disputed territory between Morocco and the Polisario front . The latter declared its independence by proclaiming the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic . Its capital is El Aaiun , a major city from which I only passed . The territory of the Western Sahara is mostly desert with frequent law enforcement checkpoints .
After a 780 kilometre ride I decide to stop just before Dakhla , on one side the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and on the other the desert sands . Continuing to look for a place to stay , my trusty camera is always in action . Eventually I settle on a place to camp on the beach where I could admire the acrobatics of the many kitesurfing enthusiasts .
Mauritania is getting closer , but not before I make a stop at
Bir Ganduz , I ' m short of fuel and unfortunately petrol stations are lacking . I decide to stay overnight in a hotel where the lobby is a sort of oasis with lots of palm trees . At the reception I ask for fuel and two guys offer to get me some with their car . On their return they refuse to be paid for the fuel and the service . I thank them , full of emotion .
Riding the last ninety kilometres with impatience as I am separated from Mauritania , I do not know how much time will I spend at the border , both outgoing and incoming but , I ' m confident .
With the usual customs formalities completed I leave Morocco . The road that awaits me is actually a track that nobody wants to pave . I immediately realise that defining it as a road is a euphemism . Rows of trucks stopped both on the right and the left do not prevent me from seeing the sign that indicates the danger of landmines along the border .
I decide to follow the other way which , within the landscape is a cemetery of cars , commercial vehicles , shacks , and garbage . I feel like I ' m passing through the lost lands of the film Mad Max .
