I questioned the statement and yet he , Shajad and Raj all confirmed the truth .
“ Not even the men riders a week before made it through , they turned back ,” Moti explained . “ Be proud .”
Silence fell across our small group as everyone took in the occasion . The tight hairpins that had challenged my riding , the rough conditions that had challenged the bikes , the high altitude that had challenged the riders , seemed insignificant as we assessed the stunning landscape dotted with gonpa , stupa , and other religious constructions . The people here never complain about the challenge of movement , they just get on with what is required .
“ Come ,” Moti suggested . “ Let ’ s get to Padum and we ’ ll have a beer .”
A suggestion never sounded better , we all smiled . A beer never sounded better .
As he mounted his bike , something inaudible came from Moti , yet I ’ m sure I heard what he said .
