better than what the maps would suggest . What looked to be a narrow ribbon , winding its way through the mountains was actually a well made sealed construction , of which plenty of road crews were still at work . Women and young children were a constant sight , around every bend a new group were working feverishly , either clearing the road or preparing it for a layer of deep black bitumen .
These workers were deeply proud of their hard labour , explaining why the roads must be maintained , something about transport for the military trucks , it ’ s clear that linking all of these high-altitude villages is a priority , China and Pakistan are not far from where we stood . A pair of local ladies explained that they walked from the nearby village everyday to work , I looked across the valley and couldn ’ t help gasp as I realised they must walk around 30
