Trekking on it had been quite a hike with multiple river crossings to arrive at the cathedral cave that included many more rock paintings before then diving down into the Boowinda Gorge . The traverse through the tall and thin canal including plenty of rock hopping , it rewarded with jaw dropping beauty provided by nature .
The hike back to camp provided time to reflect on the days ’ experience , the walk in the opposite direction providing a differing perspective , both sides of the experience . One day , one experience , one adventure that will live with me for an awfully long time . What does one do after such an epic day ? Rest , of course , that meant two more hikes . Two small walks , remarkably close to camp .
A nearby walk , called the rock pool hike , just a 300-metre stroll from the main road , I ’ d headed out to have a look and again I ’ d been met with a water crossing , this time in motorcycle boots and pants , I hadn ’ t been too worried about getting wet .
A fellow hiker , on the other side , mentioned that he ’ d seen a number of platypi in the main rock pool . Having never seen one in the wild I was quite keen to catch a glimpse . A grassy patch provided a seat , I sat and waited . Amazingly within a few minutes one popped up , right in front of me . It had stayed for just a brief moment before ducking back into the obscurity of the dark waters , I had finally caught a glimpse of this unique animal in the wild .
This small glimpse prompted me to sit a while , high on the rocks , hoping for another sighting . It didn ’ t happen yet it did allow me to take everything of my surroundings in . Quite calming .
An hour passed , time to head back to camp for lunch and a chance to take things easy , although one more track was calling and after a rest I
