black stones and ash dominated the landscape engulfed by lush green woods in the far distance . The contrast was incredible .
Once we reached the crater , we could feel the hot temperature of the stones we were walking on . We didn ’ t have to be experts to know that we were standing on top of an active volcano . It hadn ’ t erupted since 1999 so in theory we should be safe . Right ?
It was time to slip into our illfitting Minion costumes . I had no doubt they would offer truly little protection in case something went wrong but somehow , they still felt safer than wearing shorts and a vest . The speed record to sandboard down Cerro Negro lies at 60 miles per hour . And there aren ’ t exactly any brakes on the board . So yes , I hiked up the volcano with my Adventure Boots to make sure I could reduce my speed if necessary . My Alpinestar Toucan boots completed the already hideous look we were going for .
The first part of the volcano is somewhat steep . We decided I would go first , and Fiona was going to follow . I edged forward unenthusiastically . And of course , I used my feet to break as soon as I slid down . It was quite difficult to pick up the speed again and I realised that I needn ’ t have worried . It ’ s incredibly difficult to reach speeds of 60 miles an hour and I doubt this record was set with the same wooden boards we had hired at the bottom of the volcano . Fiona proved my theory as she plummeted straight down the volcano without ever attempting to stop . She was fast , but I doubt she came anywhere near breaking the record ! Once we reached the bottom we were just soaking in the views .
