William Creek
Set amongst the worlds largest cattle station , William Creek is roughly the midway of the Oodnadatta Track . Ironically , William Creek is also regarded as South Australia ’ s smallest town with its permanent population of just six people , yet it has services that cater for many . A great little pub that keeps the traveller watered and fed , and is also the headquarters of WrightsAir , a small airline that offers a unique view of the region . William Creek is also a stepping off point for Lake Eyre proper , a ride of often deep sand and dust will take you to one of the worlds most unique sites , where you can camp on the shore of Australia ’ s largest lake at Halligan Bay .
Oodnadatta
For what the track is named Oodnadatta is around one third from the northern end of said track . To this day Oodnadatta is an important centre for Aboriginal culture with locals running numerous small businesses and community ventures . A rich European history abounds through the connection to the Ghan Railway as witnessed by the impressive station that includes a small museum . The Pink Roadhouse is a beacon amongst the desert offering a cold drink , hot food , a post office , and also mechanical repairs .
Mount Dare Once nothing more than a kitchen servicing the Mt Dare cattle property , this has become one of the worlds most remote pubs and is often the starting , or ending , point of a Simpson Desert crossing . A beer , a bed , and even fuel , Mt Dare is an oasis amongst the arid landscape . The way in is often rough and taxing , yet well worth the ride .
Birdsville
The heart of Queensland ’ s channel country , Birdsville is as iconic in outback folklore as anywhere else . On the banks of the Diamantina River Birdsville was once a staging point for the cattle drovers heading into South Australia , now it ’ s a tourist centre on the edge of the Simpson Desert . The small town offers a unique outback experience but has become somewhat of a tourist trap , a beer on the veranda of the Birdsville Hotel is a must as is a camel pie from the bakery .
