The Otways are synonymous with logging , it continues to this day . Pockets of land stripped back to the earth hide within the old growth national park region . The many towns still occupying the region amongst The Otways were created to support an industry hell bent on destroying one of the world ’ s unique environments . And here was proof the lengths that European Australians were willing to go for a profit or to alter the environment , to consume .
Rod had taken us down a hill of a few hundred metres with around a 100-metre elevation change , it was steep , wet , and overgrown , immensely beautiful . He suggested that one day he ’ d lead a group of bikes down the hill , “ like hell you will ” I thought , and if he did , I needed to make sure I was there to see it . Then as we approached the bottom , Carisbrook Creek , we began seeing the slightest glimpses of human settlement .
