should be accounted for yet there ’ s more that must be considered .
The Route . Plan your route so that you can ensure the distance can be covered in the allotted time . Back roads are often best , but ensure they are in a condition that won ’ t hinder an average speed .
Collect Proof . Every time you refuel ask for a receipt and photograph it next to your odometer . Do this when you start , at every stop , and when you finish . These receipts must show the date , time , and location . And keep these receipts .
Provide Proof . When submitting all of the evidence of the ride to the IBA make sure everything is accounted for , including a GPX file of the route taken . Yes , this is most important , especially in a format that is recognised to assist with verification of the route .
This evidence is vital , you don ’ t want to ride for 16 hours plus to find that your effort is invalidated through lack of evidence .
“ This is bloody ridiculous .” And as I sat there , the frustration now reaching a point of no return , I realised that the representative of the Iron Butt Association wasn ’ t being difficult by asking questions , he was just trying to verify my ride and that my inattention had cause the issue . I couldn ’ t provide a useable GPX file .
“ Was it all worth it ,” I ’ d been asked on the night of the ride . “ No !”, I ’ d replied . “ But I ’ m glad I did it .” And eventually , all was sorted and the numbness in my butt receded . A pointless venture turned into one of satisfaction , and why do life activities need a point ? Do something simply because you want to and because you enjoy the challenge .
