We hooked the two remaining tow ropes to each end of the tube and continued the adventure making it out to a main road at around 4.30 . With phone reception I rang Paul and told him to tell Graeme to meet us at Serviceton which was 40 or so kilometres from our location .
Arriving at Serviceton , we found shade and laid down for a rest as Graeme appeared with cold drinks and snacks to eat .
This would be a day neither Scooter , myself , nor Dickie would forget in the near future . The type of day that if we weren ’ t well organised it could ’ ve been much more serious . The type of day you ’ re glad and proud of the people you choose for your crew , people who can work well and make considered decisions under duress .
Despite the issues I had with my motorbike , the tour was able to proceed to the end , which was great news because one of the guest ’ s motorbikes needed to be put into the support trailer with 70 kilometres to go . Not bad really because that same bike had the engine pulled apart , piston and rings removed then adjusted at the previous day ’ s lunch break . But that ’ s an entirely different story …
We left Serviceton around 6pm and after a 7-hour trip home I managed to crawl into bed at 1.25am and that was the adventure , one I could write a book about , perhaps I ’ ll settle for a short story instead ... RB riding through and around some exceptionally large , deep mud holes and ruts .
Occasionally this section required Scooter to go far left and me far right , which created an issue with the tow rope dragging on dry clay areas mixed with exposed mallee roots , thankfully it didn ’ t get snagged on any of them . But we did come unstuck once when Scooter chose a line and then changed his mind at the last moment , leaving me no alternative than to let my left foot off the peg and bail out . The tow rope unfortunately sprung back and got caught around Scooter ’ s rear tyre , it damaged the tube so much it needed to be laid to rest . Rest In Peace tube number one . Up stepped tube number two , my spare 18-inch rear tube .
