to marvel at the character and strength of the motive which could hold a man constant in such a course ” and as I sat astride my bike knowing that the next leg of the ride along the Great Central Road would take us to what must be his most famous discovery I knew that here , at what seemed an obscure almost pointless oddity in the middle of an Australian desert was undoubtedly the greatest tribute to a man who did indeed have successful expeditions , here was a scientific exploration undertaken daily that offered so much to an entire continent .
