pilot me along the route ? Without sight , could I draw a relatively accurate image of the journey by using just my four remaining senses ? Lastly and more importantly , could I appreciate it at all ?
What I knew , without a doubt , was that if I could make this happen and have a good experience , then anyone could . I knew there were multiple bike hire companies in Cape Town where the route starts . I called my petrol head mate , Big Mike ( so named for his towering height akin to the famous wrestler , ‘ The undertaker ’) and made my pitch .
An hour later , Big Mike was at my place pondering the map and considering the idea . We knew that we would have to travel all the way from the mother city , Cape Town to Port Elizabeth at the start of what is known as our Sunshine coast . The journey would take us at least a couple days , each way . We would pass through the semi desert landscape of the Klein Karoo and pass over many twisty mountain passes . There would be dozens of wine farms and some wildlife reserves dotted along the roadside .
With a plan in mind and a clear idea of what we needed , there was just one problem . I may well be known as the Blind Scooter Guy , but on my little 150cc Vespa , it would have been a bit of a stretch . We needed something bigger . I picked up the phone and made the next call : “ Hello ScootDr ,” came the voice . “ Can I please speak to Pete ?” I asked . “ Hi Pete . Do you perhaps have a suitable scooter in your rental fleet that could get me and a mate all the way across the length of Route 62 in two days ?”
Pete just laughed and said , “ We most certainly do . Not just anything , but actually the perfect thing .”
With a large Sym 300 from ScootDR ’ s rental fleet organised , we packed our bags and got ready for the ride of a lifetime . Route 62 . The
