commentators should step away from the cities and explore the continent .
“ Oh , Australians as a whole aren ’ t racist ,” she puts forward . “ No , not racist perhaps just ignorant .
“ Many Australians don ’ t see what is going on , even when they ‘ travel ’, it ’ s too inconvenient . They pass judgement , believe in interference but don ’ t want to understand the truths .”
It became clear early upon meeting that here was a person with strong beliefs yet has the ability to listen , to learn and to adapt . Roz doesn ’ t seem to judge but rather embraces all , looks for strengths and uses her own foibles as an example of how to encourage .
Ten months earlier Roz had sat atop her tiny Honda CRF250L , aptly named Artemis , the Greek goddess of the wild , the moon and the hunt . There ’ s something of Artemis in Roz , a love of the wild , being at one with all around but it goes deeper , perhaps like the legend of antiquity there ’ s a connection with protection , with being a patron to young women seeking more , seeking adventure .
Roz ’ s adventure took on a life when she found herself on the end of failed relationships , the corporate world seemed to be drawing life from her , she needed time to regenerate , to appreciate , and like many before , to discover her world and herself .
As we moved on toward our night ’ s destination ,
somewhere amongst the unique terrain of the Grampians National Park , I couldn ’ t help but wonder if Roz was seeking or even running . There ’ s certainly a craziness to Roz , an infectious brashness that soon has you in high spirits , laughing at shared stories and opening to a stranger , a friend newly made . It ’ s a quality found so little in this modern world of social media and technical gadgetry where friendship is a thumbs up or even a share .
It ’ s that same technology that has made Roz somewhat of a celebrity , at least amongst the ‘ adventure riding fraternity ’. With the slightest of prompt , the conversation swings to her YouTube videos documenting her adventures .
“ It wasn ’ t meant to be something that it ’ s turned out to be ,” she laughs . “ Originally it was just for my riding mates and family back home and then a few of them started sharing on different Facebook groups , eventually I cut out the middleman .
“ My videos aren ’ t like others , they ’ re not Hollywood or over produced ,” she continues . “ I don ’ t try to sell products from companies that have sent things my way . I don ’ t want it to be that way , this is my journey and dictated by what I feel on the day .”
We both laugh as we recount tales of videos by other travellers , what works and what doesn ’ t .
“ Keeping it real is important ,” she adds . “ Being true to
