Walking through the field of light is like you are in an illuminous field of tulips with light patterns moving in waves of colours . Riding back from Yulara to the north-south highway we were seeing the red sand dunes from a different angle . The area appears to only have sparse vegetation . When you stop and take a closer look there are many plant species . So many shrubs with unique flowers . Don ’ t race through . Take the time to absorb this desert environment .
As border restrictions do not permit fruit and vegetables to be taken across the state border into South Australia ( SA ) we needed to get rid of a bag of fresh baby carrots we had in the sidecar boot . We met two young girls at a roadhouse who were happy to be given some fresh food . The girls one French and the other Argentine were travelling north to pick Mangos . The Argentinian girl talked about how worried she was about her parents in Buenos Aires . Her dad was a tango dancer , now out of work due to COVID . Many European backpackers were on the road , travelling to pick fruit and work on cattle stations .
It was another clear day , a day to get further down the road . Travelling on a motorcycle is a day outside of normal life . What will each day bring ? After preparing another online border crossing application we crossed from the NT to South Australia . There were many police , army and government officials keeping a close eye on people crossing the border .
Shimmering heat on the gibber plains on the way to the opal mining town of Coober Pedy . Onward we travelled across the stony ridges and moonscape plains . Coober Pedy had a bit of a wild west feel . A frontier town , close to the Simpson Desert but only 850km to Adelaide . That
