The United Kingdom market is one area that highlights this as Honda , who usually top the sales figures , fell to third even beaten by Lexmoto , a specialist in scooter manufacturing . It ' s believed the uptake of scooters can be laid squarely with commuters wanting a form of transport that won ' t expose them to possible Covid-19 infection .
BMW Motorrad were one manufacturer leading the way . The German company had its second-best sales years following the success of 2019 , with just 4,000 less sales worldwide .
In Australia sales of BMW ' s grew by over 15 % of larger bikes , those greater than 500cc , impressive in a market that grew by 9 %.
According to Andreas Lundgren , General Manager of BMW Motorrad Australia , the success can be partly attributed to updates made to existing models and a portfolio of new machines .
Many other manufacturers followed suit , releasing updates or new models . It ' s a ploy that seems to have worked in an area that is so often considered a luxury . Many purchases were made by travellers who , research suggests , spend around AU $ 20,000 per year on travel had a disposable cash ' needing ' to be spent . While , as stated earlier , others wanted a way of commuting that removes them from the confines of public transport , especially in larger cities .
Financial analysts suggest that motorcycle sales will see a drop in 2021 , although many say it will be very slight suggesting that market growth will continue .
