through the heads 19 kilometres downstream , further towns and ports formed amongst the wilds of the rugged forest , creating a network of communities connected by the many rivers .
One such river port community , at the mouth of the Savage River , a tributary of the Pieman , just a few kilometres downstream , bears witness to the tough living conditions . In 1919 , the SS Croydon was ‘ wrecked ’ and still remains , visible below the rivers surface . Canoeing around this wreck it ’ s hard to image how a community survived here , the Croydon ’ s crew
