It ' s Wednesday , late afternoon on August 9 , partly cloudy , but it ' s not raining . Our twentyyear-old Harley purrs steadily at a cruising speed of 120 kilometres per hour on the Interstate 90 ... We have been travelling for thirty-three days , 16,000km behind us ... Groups of motorcyclists passed by on the route and information appearing on variable message boards above the highway : " Look Twice 4 Motorcycles Safe 2 Sturgis ” announce our destination ... In the evening we reach the place ; the 77th edition of the cult Sturgis Motorcycle Rally - the Mecca of all Harley Riders .
There is a lot of time for different kinds of thoughts during a journey , especially on a motorcycle . When we arrived in Sturgis at that time , I think both of us having analysed the previous month on the road , couldn ' t believe that our plan had been fulfilled in 100 %.
When , after several European expeditions , the time came to change the continent , for the Harley Davidson obvious reasons , our conquest of America started with the United States and Canada .
Well in advance , nine months before our trip , and somehow coincidently we bought at an auction in the USA a quite old Elektra from 1997 . The motorcycle was supposed to be possibly the simplest model available , providing relatively simple service , devoid of critical solutions that could complicate our journey . The USA is Harley ' s country after all , so we were confident about parts and service availability .
As it turned out in a later investigation conducted among H-D dealers , the motorcycle was newly renovated and only required a few cosmetic fixes .
At that time , preparations were underway in Poland . We started sticking pins to the map hung on the cork board , marking the places
