that the curvature of the earth was evident .
Amongst the Sisters walked the Insiders , reasonable to assume they were also watching over the girls . I looked down toward the guarded woman , and again reasoned an understanding . Footprints in every direction , she ’ d been visited too many times to count . Just wanting solitude she ’ d been placed too close to the camp area ; the increasing travellers were drawn to her as being one of the closest . As a motorcycle traveller I understood the need for solitude , smiled in her direction , and felt the defences drop . No . She wasn ’ t Alana , nor Jill or Lorraine , her name is Joan . Yes . Joan Tucker . I smiled again .
Scrambling down the side of the eldest sister , I looked across the lake once more . Where was Gus ? I was sure I was looking in the right direction from where I had walked . I could no longer see my cast iron friend and I was sure the other figures I could now see weren ’ t there in the dark . It was a perplexing sensation that rolled over me , cryptic and baffling . A little spooky .
“ See you next time ,” I smiled at Joan as I walked past .
“ Perhaps ”, I ’ m sure I heard in a mischievous whispered voice . A slight shake of my head as I sauntered back to camp .
Another dry cowpat was dropped on the fire , the smoke wafted over me , thick and oily not repugnant . Megan looked at me , a murmur of question . I smiled and asked what she said .
“ Didn ’ t say anything ,” she shrugged . The smoke encircled the camp , and I ’ m sure I saw Gus in the near distance .
“ Mate , put that thing away ,” I laughed as we packed up camp . LW
The Inside Australia art installation remains at Lake Ballard , around 50 kilometres north west of Menzies or 180 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie . The road from Menzies , whilst partly dirt , is well maintained and easily ridden .
Camping at Lake Ballard is permitted , although is becoming increasingly popular and less remote . Toilets are provided however , you must take your own water and firewood , when permitted . Cattle occasionally wander the area provided numerous pats , they burn well when dry , occasionally smoky yet not bad , and certainly not hallucinogenic . The smoke does keep the mosquitoes away .
The historic mining towns of Leonora and Laverton are within 220 kilometres of Menzies , where fuel is available . Menzies ’ supply was a self-serve facility however , it ’ s believed to be now discontinued .
Accommodation is available in Menzies and some limited facilities . The Grand Hotel , in the ‘ ghost town ’ of Kookynie , also has accommodation . It ’ s an easy , interesting ride to get there . motorcycleexpeditions - motorcycleexpeditionaustralia
