1 . Burma ' s ruling military regime changed the nations name to Myanmar in 1989 stating that ' Burmese ' only refered to the regions largest ethnic group and didn ' t recognise the other 134 communities . The name Burma had been applied during British colonialisation and remained when the nation became independant .
The nation became independant of British rule in 1948 and became known as the Union of Burma , later ( 1974 ) changed to the Socialist Reuplic of the Union of Burma . Pro-democarcy demonstrations in 1988 saw the name revert to the former however , the following year the name , at least in the vernacular form , was changed to the Union of Myanmar , as too were a number of other place names to reflect what there were named prior to British rule .
In 2008 , after the country received a new constitution , the name the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was adopted by the United Nations however , a number of nations , including the UK and USA refuse to recognise this as a protest to the name not being put to the people of the nation . Australia , takes a fence sitting approach , recognising both forms and uses either when it suits diplomatically .
