The Shoei Hornet ADV is the second
generation of ‘adventure’ helmet from the
Japanese manufacturer and is aimed at
the top end of the helmet market.
At around AU$800 it’s not cheap,
but what do they say about
the cost of a helmet and
the cost of a head? As
an upside the Shoei
Hornet is a very
well-made helmet
although does
have a few issues.
Construction
is multi-ply matrix,
fibreglass in other words, yet is
handmade and well-constructed.
The internals are dual layer, multi
density and fully washable. The
Hornet is quite a comfortable
helmet although it does fit very
differently to the equivalent
road biased helmet. My ears are
generally crushed and at times can
become quite painful.
The Shoei Hornet comes in at
around 1.5 kilograms, not light, yet
not too heavy. It does get buffeted
by wind a little, to be expected being
an ADV helmet with a peak. It’s not
uncomfortable.
The larger visor is perfect for
additional vision, added to by the
pinlock feature which you also get with
the helmet. The visor is designed for
quick release without having to remove the peak and can
