The Shoei Hornet ADV is the second generation of ‘adventure’ helmet from the Japanese manufacturer and is aimed at the top end of the helmet market. At around AU$800 it’s not cheap, but what do they say about the cost of a helmet and the cost of a head? As an upside the Shoei Hornet is a very well-made helmet although does have a few issues. Construction is multi-ply matrix, fibreglass in other words, yet is handmade and well-constructed. The internals are dual layer, multi density and fully washable. The Hornet is quite a comfortable helmet although it does fit very differently to the equivalent road biased helmet. My ears are generally crushed and at times can become quite painful. The Shoei Hornet comes in at around 1.5 kilograms, not light, yet not too heavy. It does get buffeted by wind a little, to be expected being an ADV helmet with a peak. It’s not uncomfortable. The larger visor is perfect for additional vision, added to by the pinlock feature which you also get with the helmet.
