TRAVERSE:
A Risk Worth Taking?
Whilst speaking with overland
travellers , those that have
become ‘trapped’ due to the
COVID-19 pandemic ,it was
interesting to see how many had dealt
with it, with being ‘trapped’.
Many took it in their stride and
saw it as a part of the adventure; not
taking risks or putting the lives of
others in danger, yet rather becoming
a part of the local community and
living life amongst people who too
had no idea what would happen next.
Others sought the quickets route
home, wanting to be close to loved
ones and away from ‘danger’. There’s
no right nor wrong, it’s a personal
choice. Yet one thing seemed clear;
there was no grey area, it was one
decision or another. What would you
do in a similar situation? I’m not sure
how I would answer that.
Personal opinions aside, I did read
on in amazement that the Sturgis
Rally was planned to go ahead (in fact
happening as this issue goes live), the
weeklong motorcycle rally expected
to see almost 250,000 bike enthusiasts
converge on the small community in
South Dakota, USA.
Numbers were due to be down on
previous years yet 250,000 is a lot of
people, without masks and certainly
not social distancing. The truth
is, the demographic of those that
venture to Sturgis are those that are
most at risk, the coming weeks will
be telling.
The hosting and attendance of
Sturgis seems in stark contrast to
the experiences of those that are
travelling overland, around the
world, and how they’ve dealt with the
pandemic. Some riders have ignored
the dark clouds, heading into a storm
while others have seen the rainbow
on the horizon and are content to
wait.
Enjoy the read, enjoy the ride, and
stay safe …
