but was not able to speak to Winifred herself. However, on a recent trip to Australia, I was able to visit her in her care home near Melbourne. "She was unable to communicate with me but I was honoured to be able to sit with her for a while." Jacqui had already been planning a commemorative ride across Australia (and back) as a tribute to the 70th anniversary of Winifred's ride; taking in the same route, at the same time of year and now believes this is even more poignant, "it is important to not let her achieve- ment sink into obscurity". Jacqui passed on her thoughts to "this fearless pio- neer", sentiments we echo. In passing, Winifred has left a legacy. She won't be remembered like a cricketer, a footballer, a sporting 'hero' ... it matters little ...
