Paulo Goncalves was taking part in his 13th Dakar
with a best finish of second in 2015. Known to everyone
as ‘Speedy’ Goncalves won 23 titles in such disciplines
as motocross, supercross and enduro, winning an FIM
Cross-Country Rallies World Championship in 2013. He
raced at Dakar for Husqvarna, Honda and this year the
Hero MotoCorp. His death brought tributes from all over
the world, including Portuguese President, Marcelo Re-
belo de Sousa, who said Goncalves “died trying to achieve
the dream of winning one of the hardest and most dan-
gerous rally events in the world, in which he was always
a worthy representative of Portugal”.
