ANGEL OF
THE NORTH
"
Why are you going to Scotland?
Is not it raining all the time?
There's nothing but rough weath-
er, sheep and whiskey!"
But for us one thing was certain ...
Scotland here we come!!
It is a wonderful summer evening
in July when our journey began with
the arrival at the central station. The
train took us a little closer to Dussel-
dorf and the final destination. We
made our-selves comfortable in the
sleeping compartment knowing we
had time to enjoy Amsterdam with
the ferry leaving the following eve-
ning.
A traffic jam blocked the highway
as we made our way to the ferry, we
filtered our way through the cars
until, suddenly, a barrier blocked
our path. In front of us, a handful of
sailing ships passed right under the
highway. An amusing spectacle.
Checking in, we quickly made
friends with fellow bikers which,
proved to be helpful when loading
TRAVERSE 65
the motorcycles. The crossing with
the DFDS ferry was pleasant, thanks
to the cinema and a calm sea.
It’s good, traditional Scottish
weather. The rain falls almost verti-
cally, ever so slightly inclined to the
side. This is how we are greeted and
welcomed to the United Kingdom …
welcome to Scotland.
After a few kilometres on the
"wrong" side of the road, we were
quickly on the left. The landscape
around the border area on the A68 be-
tween England and Scotland gave us a
taste of the Highlands. At the border
crossing, we just wanted to take a
quick picture. We set up our tripod
and put our bikes in the right place.
Then suddenly a bus full of tourists
appeared.
A look at the other side of the street
made it clear we needed to change
sides. There we were undisturbed,
and so our photo was taken at a Scot-
tish landmark.
This was followed by two days of
