That was the only way to describe my feelings when told it was time to climb aboard a 2018 Harley Davidson Heritage Soft- tail. A heavy lumbering chunk of a machine. Not what I thought could ever be described as an adventure ma- chine ... And this is where we should all step back and ask, “what actually makes an adventure bike?” I, like many others, had a preconception that Harley Davidson’s aren’t suited to adventure, often told they are too big, too heavy, too thirsty, too impractical … the against comments just go on and on. Yet questioning what makes an adventure bike, or more to the point, what makes an adventure, had me thinking. Isn’t an adventure more about a state of mind? About what you experience? Have you done something differ- ent? Where you challenged? I was starting to see that perhaps this bike could be an adventure bike, a bike TRAVERSE 67
