TRAVERSE Issue 10 - February 2019 | 页面 72

T he H orizons A re , W ell ... Joe Enberg In 2011, at the tender age of 45, I got my motorcycle license. I purchased my first motorcycle; a 2001 Honda 750 American Classic Edition Shadow in June of that same year. I then took a riders training course and passed the next level of graduated licensing, which allowed me to ride my bike wherever and whenever I wanted to. Trans- lation: Freedom That same year I started planning my first big motorcy- cle adventure; to cross this great big, beautiful country we Canadians call home, through the Canadian Rocky Moun- tains to the Pacific coast and Vancouver Island. May of 2012 I set out on that adventure and, along the way, I learned a ton about solo long-distance motorcycle travel. The most important thing was that there was so much more to learn. Three years, one accident, and two broken ankles later, I purchased a new motorcycle. Even the category sound- ed exciting; an Adventure Motorcycle. Oooooohhh, the places we would go! But wait! What did I know about adventure motorcycle riding? Barely enough to fill a tank bag! And what the heck was a tank bag anyway?! A short Google search brought me to a long night of reading - and an as yet unquenchable thirst to get out there and find my adventures. It suddenly seemed that my horizons were – well ... Unlimited. If you have not yet been initiated into the world of Hori- zons Unlimited, I encourage you to head to www.hori- zonsunlimited.com and better yet, join the HUBB forum (Horizons Unlimited Bulletin Board), quite likely the most informative online overland travel forum you have ever visited. Horizons Unlimited is the go-to resource for overland adventure travellers from all walks of life and all modes of travel. Cars, trucks, Unimogs, Westfalia’s, bicycles and, of course, motorcycles of every type and size can all be over- land travel vehicles. On the Horizons Unlimited website you are definitely going to be able to find answers to your questions about your own personal form of travelling across borders and towards new horizons. An even better way to find answers and inspiration is to attend a Horizons Unlimited Travellers Meeting. You will meet like-minded people who are just as excited to follow their adventure passions around the world as you are. The founders of Horizons Unlimited are Grant and Su- san Johnson, a Canadian couple who came together in their thirties over a shared passion for travel and adven- ture. A Round-The-World tour on an old BMW R80G/S mo- torcycle was the genesis for what has become the lifetime pursuit of passion for them both, and Horizons Unlimited is the result. So while you cannot say that Horizons Un- limited truly calls any one country home, the couple that brought it to life still rest their boots, and hang their hats in Canada. We are currently gearing up with preparations for the 2019 Horizons Unlimited Ontario Travellers Meeting to be held once again at the Golden Beach Resort on the shores of Rice Lake in Ontario, Canada from May 23 to 26. This will be the sixth edition of the Ontario Travellers TRAVERSE 72
