The nearby towns, all within 150
kilometres of the National Park, of-
fer all levels of accommodation; ho-
tels, motels, pubs and camping, yet
it’s staying at Mungo that offers the
greater experience. To be amongst
the mallee country, to be amongst the
natural history, the geological signif-
icance, to be amongst the oldest hu-
man history on earth.
There’s the option to stay in rea-
sonable luxury at the Shearers quar-
ters, right in the heart of the Mungo
region. The quarters are new and
situated at the visitors centre which,
itself is at the venue of the old home-
stead offering a look at more recent
human history. This itself is worth a
look. The comfortable lodgings have
air-conditioning, communal kitchen,
toilets, showers and BBQ’s. It’s central
and convenient yet perhaps not the
real outback experience. Costs are
around AU$60 per room, per day.
Just outside of the National Park,
around 3km from the visitor’s centre,
TRAVERSE 63
there’s Mungo Lodge. Not affiliated
with the National Park, Mungo Lodge
offers accommodation and an expe-
rience a little more luxurious. A bar
and restaurant are surrounded by
camping, caravanning and cabin fa-
cilities. Considering the location, the
prices are very reasonable, the food
and drinks are plentiful, and the ser-
vice is fantastic. Mungo Lodge is a
perfect place for a cold beer after a
day of exploring the natural and cul-
tural history.
