I
n a recent issue of Traverse we covered the great
work that Claire Elsdon and her great team at
Pikilily are doing for health care in remote areas of
Tanzania.
Sadly the District Medical
Officer for Sengerema has
informed Pikilily that their previous
commitment to pay for the salaries
for five women ambulance riders plus
petrol for each of the two bikes for the
year can no longer be honoured due
to budget constraints.
A great deal of work has already
been put into this project (see info-
graphic) and otherwise, everything
else is ready and in place to start this
much needed life-saving community
service to bring labouring mothers in
rural Sengerema into the District Hos-
pital via Pikilily's reliable, low cost,
high impact ambulance service and in
turn, doing their part to bring down
the devastatingly high maternal mor-
