In the distance the red machine burbles, farts, and pops
before the drone of its engine indicates it’s building speed.
Rapidly building speed.
Rapidly falling from sight.
A convoy of motor-
homes, trucks and small
motorcycles try to keep
pace with the BUB 7. “Id-
iots”, I laugh to myself as
we too are trying to match
the pace. We’re only about
200 miles per hour slower,
yet we make it to the end of
the 20-kilometre length of
salt before the BUB 7, be-
fore Valerie.
“She
didn't
make
it,” someone remarks.
“There’s been an accident.”
Stunned silence, as we
all look to the distant,
shimmering horizon for
answers.
At around the fourth
mile, the red machine
suddenly fell to it’s
right hand side, then,
at over 340mph (almost
550km/h) flipped into
the air. Bouncing like a
child’s toy, the parachute
automatically deploys in
an attempt to bring the
out of control machine to a stop. It continues to bounce as
the canopy is smashed against the hard salt, exposing its
