How I became ... The Blind Scooter Guy I n 2013, after five years of planning, an extraor- dinary thing occured. Chris Venter, and three 'friends' set off, aboard their little, overloaded 150cc LML Vespa scooters to ride south to north, Cape Town to Dublin. Yet, this was only the begin- ning ... Midway through the gruelling expedition Chris became seriously ill, cutting short his ride and the work he was do- ing to raise awareness of the plight and funds for paedeat- ric hospitals across Africa. He needed to be flown back to South Africa, back to Cape Town, for treatment. It's here where the real story begins. Chris had contracted a virus that was very quickly at- tacking his body, taking his life. Chris' world faded and fell into shadows as the virus ate at his eyes, destroying the retinas, rendering him blind. How I Became The Blind Scooter Guy is Chris' take on the epic tale, of how a motorcycle adventure very quickly became the adventure, the challenge, the expedition of a lifetime. It''s easy to become complacent when reading travel biographies; they all have personal thoughts and feeling, they all tell a tale of meeting new people, of witnessing new sites, of emotion and experience, yet nothing can set you up for the adventure Chris takes you on. From the outset, How I Became The Blind Scooter Guy hits you. No! It kicks you, kicks you right where it hurts, as you realise that the outcome of this story isn't going to be good. The opening sets a scene that you desperately want to turn from, to seek a better solution, a better outcome. The reality is you are stuck with this, and the more you come to grips with it, the more you are drawn into Chris' adventure, a life changing adventure. How I Became The Blind Scooter Guy is a remark- able tale, told by an inspir- ing man. The story is what TRAVERSE Hollywood is made of, yet, astoundingly, this is true and it's with this that you are drawn into wanting to know what happens at every turn. Danger, treachery, adventure and ... exotic illness, all have you wanting more. Tears, laughter, chills and anger all fill the reader as you share the experience as told by an exceptional writer. Chris' uncaring 'friends'; the Farm- er, the Pilot and the American will leave you disgusted in human behaviour. Then there's the realisation that some- thing much larger than this is on the near horizon. How I Became The Blind Scooter Guy doesn't hold back as Chris describes his building illness and his bloody- mindedness in wanting to finish the epic adventure with a beer he doesn't even like. At times you'll question Chris' reasoning, wanting to scream at him to go home ... a sigh, then you affirm with yourself that you would probably do the same thing and keep on riding. Chris does make it to the end, and then the life-chang- ing adventure begins. Chris' wordcraft draws the reader into a new world, a world that Chris is suddenly thrust into as his eyesight dis- appears, totally blind, irrepairable. The discriptive narrative forces you to understand what Chris is going through as his world turns forever dark. His frustrations, his anger, his fears are all there, raw and un- appologetic. You will cry! As quickly as you realise that this is final Chris pulls you through to the other side, into the world that he now 'sees', a world full of love, com- passion and wonderment. You soon realise that a disability doesn't mean the end of life, as this re- markable man, Chris, has proven. He's proof that a #BlindManCan.
