On the day of crossing, arrive early, don't have anything else planned and make sure you have a full tank of fuel and some water and food. The rule is people (Immigra- tion) first, bikes (Customs) second, but there are excep- tions and many crossings now have a single desk for both agencies. Provided you have the correct visa and have paid the on-line tourist fee, immigration is generally straight forward. Customs clearance is where the problems arise as there is a need for paperwork, original documents and inspections. TRAVERSE Keep in mind that all countries require insurance of some form. Customs may check your insurance before issuing an entry permit or they may tell you it is mandatory but it is not their job to check. In some places it is routinely checked by the police, in others you will be asked only for your vehicle entry permit.
