TRAVERSE Issue 01 - August 2017 | Page 70

A little over two years ago Amanda Chan moved to Australia from Canada bringing with her a passion for motorcycles and a unique ability to make something different .
Amanda ' s passion saw her wanting to ride the many unique roads downunder unfortunately , an accident during a track day almost put any thoughts of that well and truly out of reach . While recovering , not knowing anyone in her new home , she had visions of being in an accident in a remote part of the country , stranded , hurt and in lots of trouble . Amanda acknowledged that her phone might be crushed beyond use in such an accident , front pockets often hit the fuel tank . These visions gave her an idea ...
What if she could turn an existing product into something better , something that could possibly survive an accident and protect the contents .
Amanda set herself a target and with a budget of just $ 125 she started creating the Killswitch Pack , a waistepack like no other .
The Killswitch Pack is Kevlar based and almost indestructible in fact , it ' s been tortured by heavy duty drills to make sure it will withstand almost any punishment . Like Kevlar pants this means it is almost impossible to slice with a knife , perhaps a handy attribute for those travelling to areas with pick-pocketing problems .
With the Killswitch Pack came a new company , Flying Solo Gear Company . Now almost 18 months old Flying Solo has started creating new takes on existing ideas and plans to shake up the motorcycling market . While predominantly targeting the sports market , Amanda does concede there ' s aspects of all motorcycle markets she would like to tap into ... including Adventure and Overland travel .
So much so that she recently completed a 40 day , 18,000 kilometre circumnavigation of her new home . A Killswitch went with her the whole way , carry all of her important devices and documents .
The ' lap ' threw everything at her , even the odd cyclone , and the Killswitch Pack came through with no problems at all . Amanda had faith in it , and so do we .
A four layer construction ensures the Killswitch won ' t be beaten and looks good at the same time . It is generally worn on your lower back but depending on where you are and the need it can easily be worn on your front and under clothing . At just 2-4cm thick it will be comfortable anywhere . A 20cm width and 12cm height means it will fit most wallets and devices , as well as passports and travel documents . Retailing at just AU $ 60.00 the Killswitch Pack is a bargain .
