FRENCH TOAST
An interesting fact about
French Toast is that French
Toast isn't really French. The
dish has such a long history
in the culinary world, which
can be traced back to the
Roman Empire. The earliest
French Toast recipe was
described as Aliter Dulcia "Another kind of sweet" in
the Apicius, a collection of
Roman cookery recipes in
the late IV or early V century
AD ("Apicius" therefore also
expresses excessively refined
love of food). The dish at first
contained just bread dipped
in milk. This authentic
recipe later added eggs to the
mixture of bread and milk.
People in ancient Rome loved
to fry it up and had it served
with honey. Nowadays, the
French Toast recipe hasn't
changed much. You just
need to soak bread in the egg
mixture, then fry it in butter.
A small tip for a custardy
interior, pillowy texture and
velvety feel in the mouth
is to use full-fat milk. Do
you want that rich flavor
in your mouth? There are
many options which you can
combine with French Toast,
you can pick whichever you
like such as Nutella, maple
syrup, powered sugar, cream
cheese, strawberries, or
banana. Back then, French
Toast was for the poor who
needed to use their old bread,
which is why some people
would call this Pain Perdu
-"lost bread", or "wasted
bread"; some would call it
Gypsy Toast. Today, French
Toast is adored by all the
foodies who have "Apicius"
around the world.
