The Kamchatka
Steelhead Project
location Kvachina, Snotalvayam and Utholok rivers. The Sea of Okhotsk
region Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia
description The Kamchatka Steelhead Project is a working Scientific
Research Project, using fly anglers as data collectors making it a super
interesting fishing trip. Camps are constructed of canvas wall tents on the
tundra next to the rivers. Wood stoves keep you warm at night, and the
dinning rooms are in permanent log cabins. All camps have flush toilets
and hot water showers. Remote and rustic but absolutely comfortable. All
fishing is done by swinging the fly down and across, to the most aggres-
sive dime bright steelhead on the planet, the vast majority of the anglers
choosing to use two-handed Spey rods. The rivers are relatively small and
intimate, low gradient and easy to wade. The guides are a mix of American
steelhead fanatics, and some of the best Russian guides in Kamchatka.
major fisheries Main Camp: Kvachina River and Snotalvayam River;
Spike Camp: Utholok River
travel details Travel to Kamchatka this time of year requires flying
via Moscow. Two easy flights from the US, with a layover in Moscow to
visit the Capitol, make this route the most simple in the Fall.
