EXPLORE Then we ’ re off on a day trip to nearby Nara , first capital city of Japan ( A . D . 710 ). Buddhism took hold here , and we can see its influence in sites around town . Visit Nandaimon , the Great South Gate , which leads us to Todai-ji , a temple complex in Nara-Koen Park . There is plenty to see , including the Daibatsu , an immense Buddha statue cast in A . D . 746 .
