N at i o n a l Pa r k
The Everglades National Park was established in 1934 and and was officially marked as protected in 1947 to preserve the natural wonders and “ biological diversity ” within its boundaries .
The Everglades is over 1.5 million acres in area , and is home to one of the most diverse wetland ecosystems in the world . The park is the thirdlargest national park in the lower United States , and the largest tropical wilderness in the country . The land is a mix of coastal marshlands and freshwater outlets that are covered in mangroves , cypress trees , and river grasses .
The Everglades is federally protected , so the environment remains as pristine and untouched as possible , with the acceptance of northern developments and “ agribusiness .” Each year , the park has an estimated 1 million visitors annually .
Activities range from a leisure walk with bird watching , to intense hiking and even camping in some of the most remote areas in the park . If you ’ re looking for a warmer destination this season , the Everglades is the perfect park for you . The humidity will be low in the fall and winter months , with moderate temperatures ranging in the 70s . This is perfect walking weather . Because of the great weather , however , it is a peak season for the Everglades , so if you plan on camping out or staying , making a reservation ahead of time is encouraged .
Hoping to see some wildlife ? Get your camera ready ! There are more than 30 endangered or threatened species that thrive in the Everglades , including the Florida panther , West Indian manatee , and the American crocodile . There are approximately 350 species of birds in the park as well , and more than 300 species of freshwater and saltwater fish .
