The bank of the Bramhaputra will fill up with
fireflies and light your way back after sunset. It
is surreal in the truest sense of the term
The river Brahmaputra is the only male
river of India. It flows through and through
Assam and become wider by almost ten
kilometres in Siang in Arunachal Pradesh.
It flows by the left bank of Dibrugarh town
and creates some beautiful spots, not just
for fishing but also staring into the horizon
as the sun and clouds paint the canvas of
the sky. Chances are that the bank will fill
up with fireflies and light your way back
after sunset. It is surreal in the truest sense
of the term.
Being a tea town, Dibrugarh has tea
gardens flourishing all around. You see them
to your left and right when you step out. The
smell of tea will linger forever within you if
you grew up amidst these tea gardens. Jalan
Nagar Tea Estate are the largest planters
here and their bungalow and horse ranches
are a fine representation of life in the times
of the British. The fragrance of tea lingers
everywhere and that has become a link to my
hometown that I am always away from.
Dibrugarh also has its share of heritage.
The Assam Tribune, one of Assam’s most
widely read newspapers, was first published
from this very town on 4th August 1939.
Dibrugarh has nurtured many doctors.
The Assam Medical College which was
called Berry White School of Medicine
is known to be the first medical college in
North East India. Established in 1900, it
had India’s first radiology department, with
X-ray machines imported from England.
The earthquake of 1950 brought much
destruction and the building suffered some
serious damage. It still wears a dilapidated
look. The Assam Medical College, on the
other hand has flourished and is known to
be one of the best in the country to study
MBBS.
I made the best of friends here. I made
the weirdest and the nicest of memories
here. I had my first rush of hormones here.
Dibrugarh grounded me, made me humane.
It is a place to retire to if you seek peace .
The water is the cleanest and the people are
the most cordial.
