commissioned artwork Mirrors Georgetown
draws a huge crowd. Among his most famous
works, Little Children on a Bicycle painted
on the walls of a shophouse on Armenian
Street and Reaching Up on Cannon Street are
exemplary.
Wanida Razali, a born-and-bred Penangnite,
tells me that these murals are a catalyst to
development of abandoned areas. She points
me towards artists like Rone, who drew
inspiration from the locals of Georgetown for
his artwork, she being one of them. The 101
Lost Kittens project that aims to raise social
awareness towards stray animals can be found
all over old town. The Brother and Sister on a
Swing by Louis Gan, on the walls of a printing
press on Step-by-Step Lane is a treat to watch.
However, my favourite The Boy on a Bike, idly
watching the traffic go past by on the Armenian
Street, is surreal. The nearby artwork of a child
taking a pet dinosaur for a walk is fading fast.
The subtlety of using environment friendly
paints makes the artwork transitional and will
eventually fade over time.
