Viareggio Carnevale Date: Feb 7, Feb 14, Feb 21, 2016 Place: Viareggio, Italy Viareggio Carnevale is a long tradition that has grown over the years, making Viareggio the fun-loving venue of one of Europe’s most famous and largest Mardi Gras-style festivals. A triple cannon shot from the sea announces the start of each carnevale parade, and lavish floats topped with huge papier-mâché figures, some reaching four stories high, begin their slow move along the Lungomare promenade. In Italy, it’s second to Venice as the most popular carnival in the country. The city comes alive when thousands of costumed revellers parade elaborately decorated floats and huge, towering characters past a million spectators. But, the beauty is best seen at night as they’ve crafted a truly aestheticallyspectacular combination with white snow and ice and every imaginable colour under the sun...or moon. Source: www.welcome.city.sapporo.jp Date: Feb 6 - 9, 2016 Place: Ivrea, Italy It’s a familiar story: commoners rise up against an oppressive ruler. At the Carnevale di Ivrea, however, the battle isn’t waged with guns and swords—oranges are the weapon of choice. Every year, the tiny northern city of Ivrea in the Turin province stockpiles 500,000 kilograms of fresh oranges for Battaglia delle Arance (Battle of the Oranges), a re-creation of a historic fight between townsfolk and a ruling tyrant. Teams wage a full-on fruit war, and not even a red-capped declaration of sovereignty can protect you from getting juiced. Source: www.storicocarnevaleivrea.it 80  Travel Secrets November-December 2015
