The Isle of Mull, Scotland
With 300 miles of coastline, Mull is the largest of the islands of Argyll
and the third largest in Scotland. This verdant land has been inhabited
since the last ice age, with the cultural heritage to show for it. A stone
circle at Loch Buie dates back to the bronze age, while fortified duns
and crannogs from the iron age still stand alongside medieval castles
in ruins. History apart, at the heart of the isle lies Ben More, a 3,169 foot
high Munro with spectacular views. Other than this popular climb, there
are several trails through the hills posing varying levels of difficulty. At
Tobermory, the island’s main town, cheerful buildings stand dripping
colours into the water, as yachts bob in the natural harbour. There’s
more—beaches and bays, guided wildlife tours on land and water,
boating trips to nearby islands and giant basalt columned Fingal’s cave.
