Red Square & the Moscow Kremlin
Located in the heart of Moscow, Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin are sites known across the globe, and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Moscow Kremlin dates back to 1147 when Prince Yuri Dolgorikuy described his hunting lodge as being “impeccably situated atop a hill overlooking the scenic Moskva and Neglinka rivers, recommending it be developed into a fortified town or kremlin.” Over time, the Kremlin has transformed into a fortress city with 13 buildings including the Kremlin State Palace and the president’s residence. Housing many monuments and a rich history, Red Square was initially intended as a marketplace, but has become a well-known symbol of Russia worldwide. In the square stands a distinct tiered formation; inside lies the body of famous Russian leader Vladimir Lenin, encased in a simplistic crystal casket. Designed in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is constructed from crimson granite to represent communism, and black labradorite to represent mourning. Once inside Lenin’s tomb, you will transported back to the 1920’s may come over you, as everything inside has been left untouched since it was designed. Also rising out of Red Square are the iconic domes and towers of St. Basil’s Cathedral. Their intricacy, colours, and bold patterns are sure to leave visitors in awe of their beauty. Considered an architectural masterpiece, the structure’s diversity and detail is second to none. These world famous sites should be the top of any Russian tourist’s to do list.
The Bolshoi Theatre

Built in 1780, the structure is elegantly designed and graced with extravagant detail straight from the pages of a storybook. The Bolshoi, and its troupes, were started by Prince Pyotr Urusov when Empress Catherine II gave him the responsibility of maintaining theatre performances of all types. Urusov soon became business partners with a British theatre mechanic, Michael Maddox. They grew the company from an Opera and Dramatic troupe performing in the gymnasium of Moscow University, into one of the most prestigious ballet and opera companies. Still flourishing after multiple fires and a bombing, the Bolshoi is Russia’s most significant performing arts venue. If you have an interest in the arts, be sure to visit the Bolshoi.
