Matava Resort

Environmental factors

Matava Resort, near the coast of Kadavu Island, tries to preserve the environment in different ways. The main point is their sources of energy. The bures let in sunlight and are built with all natural materials. Most of the electricity and hot water is created by solar power in the resort to further reduce carbon footprint.

The majority of its produce is locally grown as they have their own garden to grow vegetables and fruit. There are many native animals such as the iguana, gecko, 162 species of birds, dolphins and others. Wild plants are kept around everywhere including mangroves and ferns. In terms of managing waste: Plastic, glass, cans and paper are recycled, and rubbish that can be composted are used in their organic farms.

Cultural factors

The resort also tries to preserve the local culture of Fiji, by partnering with the locals in Fiji and respecting customs and traditions.

Also, tourists would hope to come to Fiji to learn more about Fijian culture and the way they live, so preservation of local culture is essential to ensure visitors would enjoy their stay.

Some examples include:

- Partnering with local beekeepers

- Hiring local organic farmers to provide daily meals (vegetables)

- A bamboo spa with full body rituals and traditional experience with symbolic meanings, while using products from ‘Pure Fiji’ which is a local company

- Building traditional bures and crafting them with Fijian wood

Overall Rating - 8.5/10

Following the criteria on the opposite page (p.6), we can decide whether Matava Resort is really an effective lodge to promote ecotourism or if the disadvantages outweigh the pros. We, the editors, believe that Matava Resort tries their best to make their resort eco-friendly by preserving the environment and local culture. However we are convinced that their resort could still be improved in some ways. For example, currently about 60% of their power supply is solar, but it would be possible to make it 75% or more for a better future in the long run. Some issues are difficult to overcome, like not all of the produce is local. Some food need to be imported to satisfy customers when they want a soft drink such as Coca-Cola during their holiday. Also, location cannot be changed to be more accessible.
