On a dark Texas road, just beyond the gate to the Buckhorn Golf
Course, your headlights pick out the sign for The Haven River Inn. When
you turn right off of Highway 473, and enter the gate, you have just entered another world. As you wind up a hill through a pecan orchard, you
notice the deer—dozens of them—who don’t even look up as your car
passes. Then, as you gracefully turn the corner, the main house comes
in view. You park the car. You’re not sure if you want to mount the steps
to the great porch, which is adorned with its inviting rocking chairs, or
turn back to try to count the deer, or head east down the hill to the Guadalupe River, which lies glimmering from the sun’s last light. “So much to
see,” you muse contentedly, “I know now, this is exactly where I needed
