DEVELOPMENT PLAN

BY MAHA KHATIB

Employee Development Plans (EDPs) or Personal Development Plans (PDPs) are very common tools used for workforce development, perhaps overused.

For them to be successful and effective workforce development tools, they have to be first related to the performance results expected from the employee, second include areas of development that are interesting to the employee, and finally should have a sufficient amount of commitment from both the line manager and the employee on achieving what they agree on.

To achieve the above, a meaningful discussion between the line manager and the employee should take place when completing the employee development plan at the beginning of the financial year, or the beginning of the employee development cycle in the organization.

Although most organizations implement the personal development plans systems, they often are completed by the employee without manager involvement, and mostly do not directly relate to the employees role in the organization, and if they do, it is vaguely linked.
